Royal Vista Southwest operates a foaling program with attention
given to all details. Twenty-four hour observation is provided
for all late term mares. Trained foaling attendants prepare
the mare for foaling and ascertain correct fetal position as
soon as her water breaks. Any abnormalities receive the immediate
attention of the onsite veterinarian. New foals receive umbilical
care, enemas, and imprinting. The mare's colostrum is checked
for level of antibodies. Additional banked colostrum is given
to the foal if the mare's level is low. The foal is observed
for adequate nursing and good health. A blood test (IgG) is
performed on the foal at 18 hours of age to determine if adequate
levels of antibodies were received from the colostrum. The foals
are halter broke and led within a few days of birth.
